Have you guys seen this? It basically populates sandboxes with data from the salesforce weekly backup

http://www.astitch.net/backupimport/

For managing larger projects with lots of config only sandboxes it's a real time saver.

(Cheers to Steve B for putting it up there for us)

Release management varies in complexity, and Jeff's company is definitely on the cutting (bleeding?) edge. Please read the Development Lifecycle Guide that Jeff cites, it may answer many of your questions, especially for less complex development scenarios.

If you have questions on release management, I suggest you also look at the discussion boards: http://community.salesforce.com/sforce/board?board.id=general_development . If you have comments about the Development Lifecycle Guide, you can also send them directly to me (mkorf) at salesforce dot com, I wrote the guide and am eager to gather real-world experiences. Jeff's input was very helpful in creating the first version of this guide. Keep telling your story!

Thanks,

-Mario

wow, this is extremely helpful. my company is currently reviewing our release management. It's good to see we're not the only ones that are struggling with this. I see with Summer '09, there is now a 'Monitor Deployments' section under setup. Hopefully, this will be expanded with future releases.
